Respect different kinds of knowledge

What the archive means
Original writing retains its dates and attribution. It may contain outdated news, unverified quotations, scientific errors or contact details that no longer apply. Preserving a record is not an endorsement of every statement it contains.
Older health and genetics claims must not be used as medical advice. Material identified as requiring substantive review is kept out of the search-engine sitemap until it is reviewed. Old forms, advertisements and tracking scripts are not part of the reading experience.
Credits, consent and corrections
Contributors should have permission to share photographs, recordings and personal accounts. We credit sources and retain original material separately from the reading edition. New illustrative artwork is identified on the image credits page.
